What Is Mediation?

In today’s society, we have lost the ability to resolve our conflicts peacefully. We immediately resort to either violence or litigation. We no longer know how to communicate with each other to work through our differences. When two people or two parties cannot effectively work out their conflicts themselves, having a neutral third party can be beneficial. Innovative Alternatives, Inc.’s mediators serve as that third party.

Mediation is a forum in which the mediator facilitates communication between parties to promote reconciliation, settlement or understanding between them. The mediator does not impose his own judgment on the issues of the parties (Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code). Therefore, the two parties truly come up with their own agreement according to the terms that they want, unlike many of the other conflict resolution processes used in our society.

Mediation promotes peaceful, effective, and thorough conflict resolution. This process can be used for disagreements within the family including divorce and custody issues, conflicts between couples, and parent/child conflicts. Mediation can also be used by schools for interpersonal conflicts such as those between students, teachers and students, and teachers and parents. Corporations can include mediation in their employee grievance procedures. Neighbors can use mediation to resolve property disputes. Any situation in which conflict arises can benefit from mediation.

At Innovative Alternatives, Inc., we maintain strict adherence to the mediation standard that has been set forth in the Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution Act of 1987. IAI is a recognized Dispute Resolution Center that is reputed not only for providing excellent mediation services, but also for the exceptional quality of training and certification of new mediators.
